5th. The sea had abated a little so that I could go on deck, where I saw the beautiful dark blue water
of the Ocean, the Channel is green and the Thames is a dirty white.
6th. The water smooth, the wind fair, the sun shining, and all was pleasant, except my bed which was
quite wet still, had a very good dinner and drank my Mother's health, as I left her this day month;
turned in with one of the other passengers, as my Father's bed was not large enough for us both.
7th. Sunday The water as smooth as a pond, yet people say in general that the Ocean is always rough,
went to the bow and saw hundreds of porpoises one of the sailors took a harpoon to strike them but
missed every time, had for dinner what they call a Sea pie, which I liked very much, eat hearty and
went to bed with my Father.
8th. The sea very smooth and what little wind was in our favour, went and fetched my bed and clothes
on deck to dry, for the sun is as powerful now as it is in June in England, had our ham cooked which
was a very good one, I made an excellent dinner.
9th. A light breeze in our favour, eat a good dinner and slept very well.
10th. A calm, found that Capt had given orders for a birth on deck to be cleaned out for my Father
it was the best in the ship for a warm climate, so that my Father and I were busy all day getting our
things from below, driving nails, making shelves etc. etc. after which we made a very good dinner off our
ham.
11th. A fair wind and beautiful weather.
12th. The wind fair, but rather inclined to veer.
